Brain MED is a non-profit foundation whose primary purpose is to promote educational initiatives with focus on the prevention and treatment of cerebrovascular and neurological conditions. The Foundation also seeks to develop alliances with healthcare providers across Puerto Rico and the Caribbean to create a Stroke Network in the region. The Foundation has a continuing alliance with the Stroke Program at HIMA San Pablo Caguas, which is a program established more than a decade ago and is certified by the Joint Commission. Look for events posted in the hospital’s Facebook page, especially around October 29 every year, when the Foundation goes all out to promote prevention and stroke awareness on World Stroke Day.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) classifies Stroke as being the fifth leading cause of death and disabilities in the United States. Puerto Rico shares this statistic with the mainland and the mean age for stroke patients in the island is 70. The fact that in Puerto Rico there is only one Joint Commission accredited program with the capacity to diagnose and treat stroke patients further aggravates the situation. There is a great need for education and the expansion of a support system for treatment of this disease.

Brain MED Foundation was created as a response to this void. The foundation’s primary mission is to educate the general public and healthcare professionals on stroke management and stroke signs and symptoms for early identification while extending and supporting Telemedicine services for stroke patients in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.

Brain MED’s vision is to help offer the most accessible and avant-garde resources in stroke education for healthcare professionals and community. Become a leader connecting patients and neuro specialists to the best neurological care available in Puerto Rico through the Telemedicine technology.
